In the USB Drop Test, we place self-prepared USB sticks in strategic locations within or around your company, or you can also drop them yourself, to test whether employees plug them in and identify security risks.
What is a USB Drop Test?
The USB Drop Test is a realistic and effective way to test your organization's security against physically targeted attacks.
In this test, we place a number of USB sticks, loaded with harmless but tempting files, in strategic locations in or around your company.
The goal is to see if employees are curious enough to plug the USB sticks into their computers.
Many cyberattacks start with an infected USB device, which allows hackers to gain access to your network or steal sensitive information.
This test shows how well your organization protects against physical threats and how employees respond.
Upon completion, you will receive a report with findings and recommendations to improve security and raise awareness about safe device handling.
Our approach to a USB Drop Test
In a USB Drop Test, we leave tainted USB sticks in strategic locations within your organization to test whether employees are handling unknown devices insecurely, allowing us to identify security risks and raise awareness.
Define purpose and locations
We consult with you to determine the purpose of the test and the strategic locations within your organization, such as workstations, meeting rooms or common areas, where the USB sticks will be left.
Preparation of the USB sticks
- We provide the USB sticks with simulations of malicious software, such as malware or spyware, which is activated as soon as the stick is connected to a computer.
- We can prepare the sticks and place them ourselves, or we can supply you with the prepared sticks so you can drop them at the pre-arranged locations.
Conducting the test
If we run the test, we will place the USB sticks in the agreed upon locations without employees knowing about it. If you drop the sticks yourself, we will provide detailed instructions and guidance on where and how best to leave them.
Monitoring and recording
We monitor employee action (without invading their privacy) and record how many people connect the USB flash drive and whether any malicious software is activated.
Reporting and analysis
- After the test, you will receive a detailed report with the findings, such as how many employees connected the USB flash drive and what risks were identified.
- We provide recommendations to improve security procedures, such as training employees to recognize high-risk devices.
Follow-up and improvement plan
We schedule a follow-up meeting to discuss the results and help implement improvement measures, such as targeted training and strengthening physical security.
This approach helps your organization minimize the risks of insecure handling of remote devices and raises awareness around security procedures.
